From the Principal

Dear families,

The term moves so quickly, it’s hard to believe we are moving towards the next school holidays. 

We were very proud to see some of our Young Leaders join us for our Student Free Day on Tuesday.  Evee, Malakhai, Noora, Rwen and Sayla did a fantastic job sharing how they experience teaching and learning in their studio.  They were particularly referring to the Think Pair Share – a way to get every child talking about what they are learning.  Some of their insights included:

  • The think pair share is helping with their confidence to talk in front of others
  • It’s hard to talk about their learning if they don’t have the ‘words’
  • Some young leaders felt more engaged in their learning when they got to talk more about it

Our staff, LAs and co-educators, found they had a lot to think about after listening to the Young Leaders.  We are hoping to invite more of our learners along to our professional learning days.  Everything we do is for our learners, so we want to hear what they have to say!

Aboriginal Education Team. This term we welcomed Marika to our Aboriginal Education Team.  We have loved to hear her ideas about how we might work more with our local Aboriginal community.  Sonny, Marika and Alice have been looking at their roles so that they can be the most effective for every Aboriginal learner at BANB6.  Here is a brief outline of what they do:

Sonny & Marika:  Aboriginal Community Education Officers (ACEO)

  • Provide cultural advice to the school and preschool
  • Support Aboriginal families with any concerns or challenges they have regarding their child’s learning
  • Support our Aboriginal learners with their social, wellbeing and learning needs

Alice: Aboriginal Education Teacher

  • Support teachers to have high expectations for every Aboriginal learner
  • Support every staff member to understand and embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures into learning programs
  • Monitor Aboriginal learners’ literacy and numeracy achievement

We are very thankful to have such a great Aboriginal Education Team.

Bullying Prevention Policy. This term, we are reviewing and updating our Bullying Agreement.  The focus is on preventing bullying and what we will do to ensure every child is safe at school.  Our Governing Council, Young Leaders and staff will have the opportunity to contribute to this.  Once complete, we will share with all families.  If you do have something that you would like us to consider as we work through this, please feel free to let us know.

Before and after school supervision. Just a reminder that our before school supervision starts at 8.30am.  Children are not supervised before this time, so please ensure that your children do not arrive earlier than this. 

We provide after school supervision at the entrance gates only, one at the back of the school and one at the front of the school. 

Thank you to our families who came along to our Reconciliation Week team time last week.  Our learners were very proud to present their learning.  Keep an eye on our facebook page for reminders about Team Time.  We love to have families there.

Neighbourhood News

Yellow 1

In yellow 1 we have been learning about Australian animals. We have been learning how to research , take notes and write our own reports on the animals. We are very excited about our new Australian animal puppets . We are going to become experts on an animal and produce a video talking about our special animal. Super excited.

Yellow 5

In Yellow 5, our Year 3 students have been busy exploring the incredible story of Eddie Mabo and learning about Indigenous symbols and their meanings. In Mathematics, we've been developing our addition and subtraction strategies in fun and engaging ways.

Yellow 2 and Yellow 3

Learners in Y2 and Y3 were excited to welcome Tracey Beaven from Uniting Care, who introduced them to the Kimochis program. Through engaging stories and lovable characters, the children learned about different emotions and how to express their feelings in positive ways. It has helped them practice lot of skills such as working together as a team, building relationships and becoming kind to people and the environment.

During literacy, our learners have explored Fairy Tales and Dreamtime Stories to develop their retelling focusing on identifying and writing the beginning, middle, and end of each story. We are also learning to say the Acknowledgement of Country with our Mates studio who are supporting the younger students as they grow and learn in their early days of arriving in Australia. 

Red3

Last Friday, Red3 students had an exciting excursion to the Adelaide Central Market and China Town. The visit was part of our learning about Adelaide’s famous landmarks.

Our learners explored the vibrant market stalls, discovered new fruits and vegetables, and talked to friendly stallholders. They had the chance to observe how people from many cultures work and shop together. For many, it was their first time seeing such a busy and colourful place.

Also, as part of our Reconciliation Week celebrations, our IELP students created beautiful artwork inspired by Uluru, one of Australia’s most significant cultural landmarks. Students learned about the importance of Uluru to the Anangu people and explored Aboriginal symbols and art styles.

Out of school hours care is currently offering after school care, pupil free days, early dismissals and vacation care. Before school care is currently being reviewed for Term 3, so if you are interested, please enquire or enrol on the myoshc website.
