From the Principal
you to all families who came along for our Family Connections Day. It was wonderful to see our learners showing their families around, visiting the specialist areas, talking about their learning and showing off our Kitchen Garden. If you didn’t get a chance to speak with your child’s Learning Advisor, please contact the school to make a time with them.
Next week we celebrate National Reconciliation Week. On Wednesday, we will hold a whole of school celebration including time in the forest, a reconciliation dance and specially made food from our Nunga group. All families are invited to our National Reconciliation Week Team Time at 9am on Wednesday and to join their child in the forest. See the attached timetable for studio visits to the forest. Our learners have been very busy preparing the area for the firepit. Hope to see you there!

Learning Showcase - Yellow South West
In English, Yellow South West (Y5, Y6, Y7) is currently studying the mentor text “Kumiko and the Dragon” for the imaginative text unit. So far, we have covered nouns and noun groups, as well as verbs and verb groups. We are identifying the author’s use of intentional descriptive language to build characters and setting, along with the use of illustrations to highlight specific information the author wants the reader to notice.
In Japanese, Angela is connecting traditional ink art and the cultural importance of the Japanese dragon. She is introducing the learners to Japanese dragon folk stories and linking this to their learning about the Year of the Dragon. We are enjoying integrating art and literature from this English unit and our weekly Japanese lessons with Angela.

YSW have been focusing on developing and applying reading comprehension strategies to build understanding and enjoyment of texts. Our learners have been practicing strategies such as predicting, questioning, summarising, inferring, and making connections. These strategies support them to better understand the plot, characters, and themes of the text. We encourage you to continue supporting your child's reading at home by discussing the books they are reading and asking them to share the strategies they are using.
In HASS, we are learning about Communities Past and Present. We have started by recording each learner’s family culture and connecting a self-portrait to a world map. This is displayed in the learning common to promote positive identity and connection to others.

In Week 2 Sonny, who is our Aboriginal Community Education Officer at BANB6, shared his knowledge and expertise of the Yidaki (digeridoo) with studios Y6 and Y7. The learners were captivated by the unique sound of the digeridoo and the stories Sonny shared about how they are made (from naturally hollowed trees) and the region of Australia they originate from (Arnhem Land).

Earlier this term we also enjoyed a visit from SAPOL who presented information about safety, bullying and cyber bullying to our YSW learners to promote “everyone has the right to be safe”.
Some of the studios are enjoying Liz visiting every fortnight with rescue animals. So far we have seen a baby goats, a baby sheep, two kangaroo joeys and her pet dogs. During these sessions the learners are taught correct ways to interact and handle animals. Liz shares stories about the animals and general information about each animal she brings. We hope to see an Australian bird (cockatoo or kookaburra) in the coming weeks to connect to Y6’s art inquiry about Pete Cromer.

Children's Centre News
Our Children’s Centre educators spent all day on Thursday learning with and from other preschool educators. The focus was around reflecting on what we currently do and how to design children’s learning to promote high levels of engagement for our children.
Our preschool children have been learning in small inquiry groups as part of their transition to school. This has included celebrating World Bee Day and joining their school ‘mates’ for sustainability lessons.
Children also enjoyed a visiting performance called ‘The boy and the ball.’
