From the Principal
Dear BANB6 Community
Term three is in full swing and we already near the halfway mark.
Swimming Lessons
Next week (week 5) our children in Reception – Year 5 will have swimming lessons each day at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre (North Adelaide). These annual lessons are so important for children to learn how to swim and also survive in the water.
Governing Council
Our school’s Governing Council is an important group of parents / grandparents that works with school staff to provide governance to the school. This involves members of the Governing Council being informed of budgeting and finance, site improvement initiatives and future planning for the school.
If you would like to join this friendly and dynamic group of volunteers and help us, make our school a better place, please pop into the office and have a chat with me. We are always seeking new members.
Planning 2024
Planning for next year is well underway. Soon you will receive a form that we ask you to complete and return to school that asks you a couple of questions about your intentions for enrolment of your children for next year.
This information helps us in our planning, and I thank you all for your cooperation.
Pupil Free Day / School Closure
There will be no school on Thursday, September 7 and Friday, September 8. The 7th is a pupil free day, and the 8th is the annual school closure day. Full OSHC services will be available so, please enquire with the friendly MyOSHC team if you would like to enrol your child.
End of Year Farewell
Last week I informed the BANB6 Community that at the end of the year I will be farewelling our amazing school. From the beginning of 2024 I will start the role of Principal of Greenwith Primary School.
This decision was a very difficult one because I have absolutely loved my time leading the BANB6 school community. The four years I have spent here have been so rewarding and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the community and working alongside you all.
In recent times so many parents and members of our school community have provided me with so many kind words and encouragement and for this I am so grateful. I will miss our school and leave at the end of the year with such fond memories.
I look forward to the remainder of the year with our community and will make the most of every moment.
Over the coming weeks, our Education Director, Paul Newman will begin working with our Governing Council to put in place processes to appoint my replacement from the beginning of 2024.
Kind Regards
Darren

Innovation and Sustainability
Purple 4

Purple 4 have had a busy start to term 3. The children have been working hard on their daily writing every morning & have shown some great improvements. Some children have been creative with natural resources found around the school, while others have been busy exploring building/making cog puzzles and domino towers. We also love cooking & gardening with Tom & Steph & really enjoyed eating the yummy food we made!

Purple 5 and 6
This term during Mathematics, Purple 5 and 6 have focused on a unit of work around measurement. During this time our learners have been able to make connections to the following statements:
- I know that mass describes how heavy something is.
- I can measure if an object is heavier or lighter than another object.
- I know that capacity describes how much something can hold.
- I can measure if an object holds more or less than another object.
- I know that length describes how long something is.
- I can measure if an object is longer or shorter than another object.
- I know that duration describes how much time something takes.
- I can measure if an event takes a longer or shorter amount of time than another event.
- I can order the days of the week.
- I can order times of the day.
- I can connect familiar events to the correct day and time of the day.
We have been exposed to lots of new vocab such as: mass, capacity, length, duration, full, empty, wide, narrow, heavy, light, more and less. We have also enjoyed make connections to the world around us and the hands-on learning opportunities provided.

Yellow 2 and 3

‘In Yellow 2 and 3 we have been inquiring into different types of animals, their features, and habitats. Every fortnight We have a visit from Liz and her animals. The learners have enjoyed watching the animals and learning about the needs of animals and how to look after them. We also have been practising labelling and writing sentences to describe the animals. We are also planning to visit the Adelaide Zoo in week 6 to learn more about animals. We are very excited for our excursion!
In Numeracy we are working on measurement and in our number learning we are exploring addition using the count on and the double strategies.’

Yellow 4
Yellow 4 has been learning a lot about our environment and how things grow. We have written about the water cycle and what trees and plants do for our world. We even planted some grass and gave ourselves a new look. At the moment we are as busy as bees learning all about bees and how they help pollinate plants and flowers and help grow our food. Did you know bees fly up to 10 km a day in search of pollen to make honey. They tell other bees where to find the pollen by doing a bee waggle. Amazing!!!!
We are doing a bee count around Banb6 each day to record where and how many bees use our school as a food source. There are some great spots for bees in our school.

National Tree Day
On Friday the 28th of July, we planted native plants in the Raingarden to celebrate National Tree Day.
‘We planted 2 trees, and Rwen’s Dad came to share the experience with us’ – Tina
‘We planted the native trees at the base of the Raingarden to purify the water’ – Evee
‘We planted a pale rush tree because if the trash traps don’t work, this tree will be a sustainable rubbish trap’ – Rwen
‘National Tree Day reminded me about the importance of trees’ – Josephine
‘The native trees we planted in the Raingarden helps to clean the water’ - Shaurya

Science
Earlier this term we started our Science Unit: Marvellous Materials.
As an introduction to our learning, we designed, and are currently making our shoes with common materials such as cardboard, paper, cloth, clay etc.
‘We thought about which materials are strong ‘- Safia
‘We made our shoe with cardboard, foam and tape’ – Evee
‘We are putting cotton inside our shoe for comfort’ – Shaurya

Red Neighbourhood
Red Neighbourhood are now deep into our ‘Red World’ inquiry. Our goal is to create our own world which emulates the same structures, problems, and decision-making processes as the real world. Students were randomly given their own country to start from, along with a random population number and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) amount. From here, they then decided on their government structures, country values and flag, understood if they are a developed or developing county in accordance with their population and GDP, worked out budgets and determined their climate in relation to where they are on the planet. Stay tuned, we have many more exciting things to come!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A Piece of Happy.
Think about the moment when someone passes you a gift. How do you feel? Happy?
Now think about the moment you pass a gift on to someone else? How do they feel? How do you feel?
HAPPY?
A tale of receiving and giving – teaching about kindness, love, and passing on happiness.
A Sprinkle of Kindness.
A tale of the power of kindness and the difference it can make to someone’s day, including your own.
There are times in your life when you may feel down. An act of kindness has the ability to change how you are feeling and lets you know that someone cares about you.
When you are kind to others, particularly in times of need, it lets them know that you care and can lift their spirits.
There is always something kind you can do. Sprinkle it.
