Purple East
Purple East had a shared cultural experience when we celebrated the opening of the ALS. Tasting kangaroo, drinking lemon myrtle tea and sitting around the campfire were highlights. Making cultural connections has happened across the curriculum this term through the fantastic rich texts of ‘Collecting Colour’ being read in InitiaLit storybook lessons, and ‘Big Rain Coming’ which we are focussing on in Hass/ science.

This week Purple East began the first of three cricket clinics run by Cricket Australia. Adam led students through a series of cricket drills to improve skills in catching, batting and bowling. Great fun was had by all!

Purple West
Purple West have worked very hard since late last term to prepare a special performance for our Reconciliation Day Team Time. For quite some time we were learning the song ‘We are one’ as well as practicing Auslan sign language to go with it. A very special ending included us learning the Kaurna word- ngai, ninna, wirltuthidnamiyu (I am, you are, we are Australian). The children were very excited to watch a very special performance and smoking ceremony from Isaac Hannam, a very proud Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri man.
This years National Reconciliation Week theme- Be a voice for generations- enabled us to start some very important conversations in the studio about our past wrong doings, healing, and ways in which we can move forward together.

Purple 4 and Yellow 6

Each Friday Yellow 6 learners look forward to our MATES session with Purple 4. This provides an opportunity for the Y6 learners to develop confidence and leadership skills by being a ‘buddy’ to a younger learner. We started the year with a collaborative art project to encourage connecting with others by having a common goal. We now have a permanent Friday booking in the BANB forest space for nature play which has been a huge success! The children are calm and considerate as they connect with others and with nature. We have seen many benefits of play during these sessions including communication, teamwork, risk analysis, problem solving and curiosity. The children have shown so much joy that we have recently increased to a double session and are now looking at the possibility of extending our time for our weekly nature play session to a half or a full day in the future.

Yellow 1
Yellow 1 has had a number of new students join our class. It has been wonderful to see the older students welcome them in and show them around our learning areas. Highlights of term 2 so far include: ALS opening, our kitchen garden session and time in the rain garden.
Yellow 2 and 3
‘This term in Yellow 2 & 3 the learners have been inquiring into the people and places in our community. We went around different places at our school and talked to our school community helpers. In literacy learning we have been working in small groups to work on reading, writing and oral language skills and learning about recount writing. Our numeracy focus has included skip counting by 2s, addition and 2D shapes. We have welcomed Xi to our studios as a Co Learning Advisor. It has been a busy term so far and we all look forward to seeing what adventures in learning the next few weeks bring us.

Red 1, 5 and 6
Red 1, 5 and 6 students have settled back this term and gotten into their regular learning.
In literacy, learners have explored what makes a successful fantasy text. As a mentor text we have been enjoying reading Harry Potter. After deconstructing plot structures, language features and characterisation, learners will soon write their own fantasy stories.
In numeracy we have finished our unit on measurement and now we are exploring multiplication and division. Our focus for this has been to learn efficient mental strategies and the manipulation of numbers over the traditional processes of multiplication and division.
A group of our 5/6 learners have been trouble shooting our VR/ AR technology. Through these sessions we have ironed out many of the issues with the hopes we will soon be able to use this technology school wide as an authentic tool to deepen the understanding of many learning focuses.
