From the Principal
Dear BANB6 Community
We are almost halfway through the final term of the 2022 school year and the end of the year is fast approaching. The last half of term 4 flies by with end of year activities and events beginning to take place. Please keep an eye out for important dates and events via your child’s Studio LA, SeeSaw and the SchoolZine app. If you are yet to download the SchoolZine app onto a device, I strongly encourage you to do so as most of the information shared by the school with the community can be found here. Information on how to download and access the information can be found in a brief tutorial within this edition of the newsletter. Unfortunately, we are having issues with our school Facebook account at the moment which we are endeavouring to resolve.
NAPLAN Results 2022
In recent times BANB6 has been on an exciting journey with our approaches to learning, particularly around Reading. Numerous programs and initiatives have been introduced that have seen our learners’ improvement and results in literacy improve over time, something we should all be very pleased with.
Recent NAPLAN results saw our learners improve positively in Reading as seen in the graph below.
Graph Explanation:
- This graph provides NAPLAN results over the previous four NAPLAN testing periods from 2018 – 2022 (NAPLAN testing was cancelled in 2020 due to COVID) for learners in year 3, 5 and 7.
- It details percentages of learners that reach SEA (Standard of Educational Achievement)
SEA (Standard of Educational Achievement)
Learners who achieve SEA meet year level expectations in the proficiency bands of NAPLAN test scores.

Year 3 Detail
Learners achieving SEA has steadily increased over the previous four testing periods which is very pleasing, with 63% of year 3 learners who completed the test this year reaching SEA.
Year 5 Detail
This year’s year 5 Reading results see a significant increase in learners achieving SEA (53%) as compared to the previous three testing periods (33%, 37% and 30%).
Year 7 Detail
Although Year 7 students no longer attend BANB6, their NAPLAN results continue to be linked to our Performance Scores. This is because the NAPLAN tests are administered early in the school year (May), meaning that they’ve only been at high school for such a short time, it is not possible to link Year 7 results to the Performance Score of the high school that they attend.
Year 7 results this year have increased from last year in learners achieving SEA (31% up to 33%).
Annual Review Day
Staff met on Monday for our Annual Review Day. This is where we all sit down together, analyse data and results taken throughout the year to celebrate successes and plan our actions for next year.
These planned actions are all related to our Site Improvement Plan (SIP) which can be found on our school’s website.
Information collected from our Annual Review Day and other forums determine changes that need to be made to our Learning Targets, Success Criteria and Challenge of Practice (key components of the SIP) to ensure that the pleasing improvements in our learners’ results continue to rise next year and into the future.
Our NAPLAN results in Numeracy (Maths) also improved in most areas.
If any member of the BANB6 community would like to learn more about any of this information, please don’t hesitate to make a time to meet with me in person.
The Educator 5 Star Innovative Schools Awards
I am very excited to announce to the BANB6 school community that we have been recognised nationally as one of the most innovative schools in Australia by being awarded as a 5 Star Innovative School by The Educator Magazine.
Below is a snippet from the Educator Magazine’s website explaining criteria for the award:
“Over July and August 2022, The Educator invited schools across Australia to participate in the publication’s 5-Star Innovative Schools awards. Now in its eighth year, this report recognises the schools at the forefront of change and innovation. Entries were open to all educational professionals who believe their school is pioneering a new direction in education. From teaching approaches to learning spaces and curriculum design, the report looks at schools reshaping the future of education. By the end of the judging process, the entries were narrowed down to 46 of the country’s most forward-thinking schools, which make up The Educator’s 5-Star Innovative Schools 2022 list.”
It is very pleasing to be able to report to the BANB6 School Community both the strong progress being made by BANB6 learners in Reading and Numeracy and to also couple this with being acknowledged for our innovation in education. Please see information and links on the following pages to the report from The Educator:

Innovation Update

Purple West

The children in Purple West were lucky enough to participate in a BollyHop dancing workshop in week 3. We were successful in receiving a grant for these workshops, as a part of the OzAsia Festival. BollyHop dancing is a combination of Bollywood and Hip-hop dancing. Our instructor was called Srijit from Euphorigo Dance Studio and he did an amazing job guiding us through the steps. Srijit taught us two different dance routines and at the end of the lesson the children performed their dance to an audience. All the children and staff had a wonderful time.
In week 4, the children in Purple West attended a session in the Hub with a representative from the RSPCA called Deb. She taught the children about the rights and needs of animals and what we can all do to keep them safe and happy. The children enjoyed participating in the session and had some great questions & wonderings at the end.

Purple East and Yellow 1
Purple East and Yellow 1 have been exploring our local community. We are lucky to have a lovely redeveloped plays-pace within walking distance of our school that we all enjoyed running, climbing, swinging and jumping on!
Each studio has begun implementing the new department curriculum mathematics units. Students have been engaged through targeted mathematics activities designed to practise and reinforce learning intentions.
Learners in week 4 were fortunate to participate in an RSPCA AWARE incursion called :‘Project: Animal Welfare (PAW) An AWARE Facilitator spoke to students about ‘Wants and Needs’ and ‘Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare’ . Through participating in this program children were able to compare the needs of animals and humans and develop an understanding of the concept of animal sentience, that animals have feelings too,
We are looking forward to celebrating our year of learning by having an excursion to the Ice arena and Bonython park later in the term. For many of our children this will be their first experience on the ice and the anticipation of this adventure is steadily building. Keep a lookout for photos in the next newsletter!

Yellow 2
In Yellow 2, we are exploring lots of new stories and the elements they contain, as well as refining our retell skills, both orally and written. We have used role playing to practice our oral retell and are focusing on including detail to enhance our written retell. We have been trying to take our leaning outside for at least a lesson a day to make the most of the lovely weather (finally).
Yellow 3
This term the Yellow 3 learners are exploring stories, the way they can be told and how they can help us to learn about the world. We have been busy learning about characters and practicing using describing words to give more information about their personalities and physical features. In numeracy students have been working with Learning Advisors to develop their understanding of place value and subtraction and have been joyfully engaged with provocations in the study of length. Sports Day was a highlight of the term so far. The learners had a great day and participated in all activities with a great sense of fun and team spirit, supporting each other to be successful and involved. In week 3 our participation in a Bollywood workshop highlighted the skills of many students in dance and movement and was a lot of fun for all. Morning routines in the studio are providing lots of opportunity for building kindness and community as well as oral language skills, through our use of the Story Champs storytelling tool. It has been a busy term so far and we all look forward to seeing what adventures in learning the next few weeks bring us.

Yellow South West
The children in Yellow South West have been highly engaged throughout our Poetry Unit this term. We have developed our understanding of poetic devices such as repetition, alliteration, onomatopoeia, personification and imagery. We have examined ‘The Triantiwontigongolope’ by C.J. Dennis and ‘My Country’ by Dorothea Mackellar and have incorporated a range of poems into our Guided Reading sessions. We are looking forward to learning about Banjo Patterson and writing our own poems.

The children have been learning about measurement in our Maths sessions. We have been very interested in estimating the height of South Australia’s Big Things such as The Giant Rocking Horse at Gumeracha and Santa in Adelaide City. We were surprised to discover the actual height of these objects!
The Giant Rocking Horse is 18 metres high .......................... Santa is 16 metres tall.

Red3
Red3 had a busy start of the term with sports day and preparations for graduation fundraising. We are preparing lunch for staff to raise money for year 6 graduation. We had tremendous response and support from our BANB6 staff. The learners have been busy preparing for the BIG DAY. There has been lot of learning opportunities in the whole process like maths, science, entrepreneur skills, language, and literacy.

Red Neighbourhood
Red Neighbourhood have been focussing on historical texts and exploring the Australian book ‘My Place’ by Nadia Wheatley. Learners are now using what they have learnt to create a time capsule and write a letter to future BANB students in the year 2072.
In numeracy we have been focussing on pattern, algebra, and the order of operations.
With Graduation just around the corner, we have been creating different fundraisers in the hopes we can raise enough money to pay for the graduation celebration and the year 6 fun day at no extra cost to the learners. Some examples have been Zooper Dooper day, BANB cinema and ice cream parlour, Henna, casual day and pyjama day. We are also in the middle of planning an after disco to get us over the line.
Finally, The Smith Family Passport to Success have been coming in and working with our year 6s to get them ready for high school. They go through different aspects of high school such as timetabling, home work expectations, feeling and emotions and top tips.
