Blue 1 and Blue 2
Blue 1 started the term learning about what makes a good story. We have listened to lots of fairy tales and discussed characters, setting and events. We are super excited now to be authors and writing our own stories through bookmaking. Our imaginations have been working overtime with some very creative storylines. We have been visiting the school Hub every week and enjoy bringing new books to the studio to read and share. Our favourite author is Lynley Dodd as we love reading about the adventures of the mischievous Hairy Maclary.
Blue 2 has been learning about traditional fairy tales/stories, the origins of food, fractions and number. We have been having fun sharing apples, water melon and our own special brand of “banana sushi”. Right now we are learning all about The Very Hungry [and greedy] Caterpillar.

Purple East

Purple East have been learning about measurement this term in numeracy. We have explored measuring length, volume and capacity using both informal and formal units. This had led to investigating, designing and creating our own balancing scales.

It has been a wholesome learning experience for the children as it incorporates many areas of learning together like literacy, numeracy, ICT and also helps them to develop lots of skills like communication, leadership, responsibility, motivation and team work. While working in teams children have shown lot of school values like resilience, responsibility, respect and collaborating with others.
In literacy children designed and made poster for advertisement. They also wrote job application in order to win the roles required in the whole process. They wrote a persuasive about why they think they could be the best candidates for the specific roles and positions needed.
In Maths children have been working on budget, financial targets doing lots of computations like addition, multiplication and problem solving. In ICT, some children were able to show some technical skills in designing posters and order forms.
Children are excited and happy to share their cultural food and recipes with everyone. They are keen to show their entrepreneurial skills.

Red 3 and 4
Red 3 have continued to learn about Health and the Olympics and more recently the paralympics. Our daily fitness regime helped us to get fitter and stronger while we learnt about the body and the best way for athletes (and ourselves) to keep healthy. Every fortnight we recorded our results from the multi-stage fitness test (also known as the ‘beep test’). The students have had some marvellous results and it’s been great to see them feeling so much more energised before we begin our learning for the day. We also learnt about the importance of a healthy diet, some mindfulness techniques for relaxation as well as learning about drugs and influences from the Life Education Van.
For hygiene, we learnt about the effects of germs and the importance of washing their hands. We did a bread experiment where we touched a piece of bread with unwashed hands, we touched a piece of bread with sanitized hands and then we left a piece of bread untouched. Over the next few days we were able to see the results of the experiment. Check out the photo!

Red West (Red 5 and 6)
Red West can’t believe that term 3 is coming to an end! Over the past few weeks we have been busy wrapping up our learning for the term. The learners are currently putting their knowledge and understanding from our writing workshops into action by creating their own print, radio or television news report based on a chosen natural disaster that has occurred in the past 100 years. We conducted a science lesson using biscuits and whipped cream (representing the Earth’s tectonic plates and upper mantle) to model the different plate boundaries. This helped the learners to understand how mountains form and how earthquakes, volcanoes, rift valleys and ocean trenches occur as a result of divergent, convergent or transform boundaries. We have also continued with our ongoing street art inquiry where the learners have explored the artworks of Bansky. They have created their own self portrait stencils and later this week they will be spray painting them to display as part of our street art exhibition in Term 4. We can’t wait to see the final product! Red 6 has enjoyed spending time with our MATES studio (Purple 1) creating cakes using natural materials in the forest. Here are some photos of the final products.
